	Dieting may be the major cause of obesity, says Jean Paul Deslypene, University of Ghent professor of Human Nutrition.  Low fat diets have been extensively studies for the last five decades.  In the last decade Americans have reduced their fat intake only to get fatter than ever; for the first time in history, a majority of males are overweight.  Meanwhile, nutritionists have ignored the lowering of female puberty from 17 to 13 years in the last century, revealing a tremendous increase in bioavailable dietary carbohydrate.

	Two AEA board members have commented that they have discovered increased energy after taking Emu Oil.  Like many anecdotal reports on the wide variety of uses for Emu Oil, this observation, at first, seems unlikely.  But lets look deeper into the possibilities.

	These two reports are intriguing.  The first board member said that he is no longer tired in the afternoons.  The first time he took the Emu Oil was in the afternoon and he had so much energy that he was awake early into the next morning.  After several such experiences, he now takes the Emu Oil in the morning.  In the other report he now wakes up several hours earlier and works much later.

	To add fuel to these reports, a recent release from the Agricultural Research Service of the USDA reported on the actions of dietary fatty acids on hormone responses in cows.  Thyroid activity was increased by specific fatty acids.  An increase in thyroid activity could account for the symptoms in the above case report.  Also, a form of the thyroid hormone called d-thyroxin is a prescription drug used to lower cholesterol.  This could also explain some of the dramatic lowering of cholesterol levels that have been seen in people that have taken the Emu Oil.
 

	Weight control is a national obsession and obesity is an expanding problem.  There appears to be as many diet programs as dieters.  While we are all quick to point out that obesity is the result of eating excessive calories and that simply reducing our food intake will result in loss of weight, these two statements are probably simplistic and incorrect and do an injustice to the seriousness of obesity.  Obesity is a risk factor in all 5 of the major causes of death in the United States.

	A quick look at the relationship between calories and pounds will be helpful.  If a dieter can reduce calorie intake by 500 calories per day or 3500 per week, the results will be a loss of one pound per week.  This may seem to be an unacceptable number to most who consider going on a diet.  Additionally, exercise programs can burn 200-300 calories per hour.  The usual American diet is 2500 calories per day.  As I will discuss, 1500 calories per day are required for maintenance of the basal, or resting, metabolic rate.  When the daily intake does not meet the resting metabolic rate plus the calories needed for physical activity, the body will use tissues in addition to body fat to make up for the missing calories.  Unfortunately, significant muscle mass is lost when caloric restriction is too great.  Therefore, a source of failure of so many diet programs is an unrealistic expectation of the rate at which rate can be reduced, which leads to a reduced lean muscle mass.  Following the diet, weight is quickly regained.

	The subject of dieting is very complex.  Therefore, I would like to focus on the following point:

	It is important to understand what factors influence our metabolic rate.  As I will describe below, the failure of more dieters best intentions is linked to a reduction in metabolic rate caused by the diet itself.

	Eating fat may seem not to make sense if an individual seeks to lose weight.  Of the approximately 50 nutrients that must be eaten, linoleic acid (found in Emu Oil) has the highest daily requirements.  Obese people may require more essential fats than thin people.  To have a successful diet, all 50 essential nutrients must be eaten in adequate quantities; otherwise the body will not work at peak efficiency. Simply assuring adequate quantities of these 50 nutrients may increase a sense of wellbeing and energy, and result in a lower weight by increasing a low metabolic rate.

	While the essential fatty acids contain all the calories of other fats, they are only used for energy when they are taken in excess; otherwise they are very metabolically active.  They stimulate metabolism, increase metabolic rate and oxidation, and thereby increase the rate of consumption of fats and glucose.  When essential fats are 12-15% of the total calories they help a person to lose weight and stay slim.  Essential fats are used for structural, hormonal and electrical functions, not for energy.  Hence essential fats help in weight control.  Actually, the conversion of the essential fatty acids to active compounds requires energy.  As long as the essential fats are not eaten in excess quantities, they require the body to burn calories rather than contribute as energy.
 

	It is very important to understand that a reduction in calories does not necessarily result in successful weight loss.  Why?  The body ratchets down its metabolic rate during calorie restriction.  This response was a necessity for survival by our ancestors. Reducing the bodys metabolism helped in dealing with food shortages that occurred during winters or famine.  Unfortunately, under reduced calories, the body conserves the more calorie dense fat (9 calories per gram) and burns muscle protein (4 calories per gram).  Thus at the end of the diet, a dieters body may have lost important muscle mass along with fat.

	About 30% of weight loss is muscle mass.  Since muscles burn 50 calories more per pound than fat, the loss of muscle mass results in a reduction in required calories to maintain the new weight.  Therefore, if the dieter goes back to eating the same number of calories after the diet, two changed circumstances are working against him or her.  The bodys metabolic rate has been reduced so fewer calories are needed to maintain the current weight, and the muscle mass is reduced, also requiring fewer calories.  Therefore, the rate of new weight gain will be greater than before the diet began.  After each diet, the proportion of increases after each dieters weight returns to the pre-diet weight.  Up to 95% of regained weight is in the form of fat as the net result of the combination of events described above.

	To have a successful weight reduction program, an increase in metabolic rate is desirable in order to burn more calories.  Therefore, an exercise program is a very important component to a weight reduction program.  Exercise causes an increase in the metabolic rate and burns calories.  It is best to maintain an aerobic exercise program.  The body burns fats and glucose under aerobic (with oxygen) conditions.  As the exercise continues, glucose is depleted and fat becomes the major source of energy.  Under anaerobic conditions (without oxygen), a different metabolic pathway is used which results in the production of lactic acid. Lacid acid is the substance that causes muscle soreness.  Therefore, for reducing fat, mild to moderate exercise burns the most fat.  If the exercise is so strenuous that conversation is difficult, it is anaerobic.

	Another way to approach a weight reduction program rather than increase the metabolic rate to avoid activities which lower the metabolic rate.  For example, eating fewer meals lowers the metabolic rate.  It is best to eat four smaller meals that include some protein to assure that the bodys metabolism is running at full steam.  Have you wondered how the Sumo wrestlers of Japan achieve their great weight by eating only one meal a day?  They reduce their metabolic rate by starving themselves and then eat a very high calorie meal which adds a large amount of fat.

	Calories are required to meet the bodys metabolic needs or energy requirements.  The metabolic needs are the sum of two parts; the first part is the basal or resting metabolic rate.  This is the minimum energy requirement.  It covers the cost of doing business, i.e. breathing, blood circulation, maintenance of body temperature.  An estimate of the resting energy demands is 10 calories for each pound.  A 150-pound person therefore needs 1500 calories to maintain their resting metabolic rate.
 

	The second part is the voluntary activities caloric need.  The table below offers some suggested calorie needs based on various activities.

	When dieting the resting metabolic requirements are the calories to maintain life.  The usual American diet is 2500 calories of which 1500 are required to sustain life.  Therefore the 1000 calories which are the difference between these two numbers are the calories that can be reduced to cause weight reduction.

	In summary, a successful dieting program requires the ingestion of all 50 of the essential nutrients.  The essential nutrient with the largest daily requirements is linoleic acid, which is found in Emu Oil.  These nutrients plus adequate calories required for the resting metabolic rate are the foundation for a weight reduction program.  Careful calorie reduction and increased exercise will aid in the gradual loss of weight.  Weight reduction is a long and difficult task.
